Blackout hits 50k Ukraine homes after Russia attacks

Russian drones and missiles pounded Ukraine’s power grid overnight into Saturday, a Ukrainian energy firm reported. This attack followed what officials described as the largest assault on Ukrainian natural gas facilities since Moscow’s full-scale invasion more than three and a half years ago.

The strike damaged energy facilities near Chernihiv, a northern city close to the Russian border, triggering blackouts expected to affect approximately 50,000 households, according to regional operator Chernihivoblenergo.

On Friday, Russia launched a total of 381 drones and 35 missiles at Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Officials stated the assault aimed to cripple the Ukrainian power grid ahead of winter and to undermine public support for the three-year-old conflict.

Oleksiy Kuleba, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Reconstruction Minister, posted on Telegram on Saturday:
“Medical teams have already transported the injured to hospitals and are providing necessary assistance. Others who were at the site are in shelters overseen by rescuers.”
