**Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Several School Children Affected by ‘Tomato Virus’**
Several school children in Bhopal have been found suffering from a viral infection commonly referred to as the ‘Tomato Virus’. In response, schools have alerted parents about its spread and advised caution.
### What is Tomato Virus?
Medically known as Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), this viral infection causes red rashes on various parts of the body including the hands, feet, soles, under the neck, and inside the mouth. These rashes often develop into blisters. Along with the skin symptoms, affected children may experience itching, burning sensations, fever, sore throat, and pain.
### How Does It Spread?
HFMD spreads easily from one child to another, which is why schools have recommended that children exhibiting symptoms be kept at home to prevent further transmission.
According to pediatricians, HFMD is caused by viruses from the Echinococcus and Coxsackie groups. The infection is most common in children aged between six months and 12 years.
The virus typically enters the body through poor hygiene practices such as inadequate hand washing after using the toilet. It can also spread through cough or sneeze droplets, as well as contact with body fluids like saliva. Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 6 days after infection.
### Treatment and Precautions
Pediatricians note that HFMD generally resolves on its own within a week to 10 days and is not considered a serious health threat. However, since there is no specific medicine to treat the disease, it is important to maintain good hygiene and take preventive measures.
Doctors have advised that children with underlying health conditions, such as heart or lung issues, should be extra cautious in order to avoid complications.
### Tomato Flu Cases in Kerala
Kerala has also reported about 80 cases of a similar infection known as ‘tomato flu’ in 2022. This illness also caused red rashes on children’s bodies, which is how it got its name. However, the exact causes of this flu have not been clearly identified.

**Parents and caregivers are urged to monitor children for symptoms and maintain strict hygiene protocols to curb the spread of these infections.**
