Bhawna Chaudhary becomes first woman flight engineer in BSF air wing

The Border Security Force (BSF) air wing has appointed its first woman flight engineer in over 50 years of its history, following the successful completion of an in-house training program. Inspector Bhawna Chaudhary, along with four male subordinate officers, was recently awarded their flying badges by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary.

According to officials, five subordinate officers were trained ab-initio by the instructors of the BSF air wing and recently completed a rigorous two-month-long training capsule. Inspector Chaudhary’s achievement marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman flight engineer in the BSF air wing.

The BSF air wing has been facing a critical shortage of flight engineers in its Mi-17 helicopter fleet. The unit operates a variety of aircraft, including the fixed-wing Embraer jet used for VIP duties, as well as helicopters such as Mi-17 1V, Mi-17 V5, Cheetah, and ALH Dhruv.

The Border Security Force, comprising approximately 300,000 personnel, was established in December 1965. Its primary responsibility is to guard India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Apart from this, the BSF also plays a vital role in various internal security operations across the country.
