Trump administration to prioritize ‘patriotic education’ in discretionary grants

By Kanishka Singh

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Trump administration announced on Wednesday that it will prioritize granting funds to programs that emphasize “patriotic education,” drawing criticism from opponents who argue that such efforts could undermine acknowledgment of critical phases in American history.

**Key Quotes**

“Patriotic education presents American history in a way that is accurate, honest, and inspiring,” the U.S. Education Department said in a statement. “To truly understand American values, the tireless work it has taken to live up to them, and this country’s exceptional place in world history is the best way to inspire an informed patriotism and love of country.”

**Why It’s Important**

Civil rights advocates have criticized recent moves by the Trump administration related to education, asserting that these actions curtail free speech and downplay crucial parts of U.S. history. Critics point to attempts to revamp museums and public spaces, as well as pressure on educational institutions.

In August, the White House announced that President Trump had signed an executive order to tighten federal grant approvals. Grant award decisions are now subject to evaluation by Trump’s political appointees.

On Wednesday, the Education Department revealed it was launching a civics education coalition that includes over 40 partner groups aligned with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.

**Context**

Last month, Trump indicated he would pressure the Smithsonian Institution—a premier museum, education, and research complex focused on U.S. history and culture—in a manner similar to his approach toward universities, which he has threatened with federal funding cuts.

On August 19, in a social media post, Trump criticized what he described as an excessive focus on “how bad Slavery was.”

Additionally, the U.S. Interior Department announced on Tuesday that all interpretive signage in national parks is currently under review.

Trump has accused various institutions of spreading “anti-American ideology.” He has also threatened to cut federal funding for educational institutions in response to pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s war in Gaza, as well as over policies related to transgender rights, climate initiatives, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
