A supermassive black hole known as SMSS J052915.80-435152.0 (or J0529) is emitting gas at astonishing speeds of up to 10,000 km per second. This remarkable discovery was made by Associate Professor Christian Wolf and his team from The Australian National University (ANU).

### Revising the Mass of a Black Hole

Using advanced optical technology at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, the research team was able to magnify the black hole’s light and closely observe the gas swirling around it. This breakthrough allowed them to revise the estimated mass of J0529, revealing that it is more than ten times lower than previously thought.

Despite the quasar’s extreme brightness, Professor Wolf explained that the central black hole has a mass of “only” about one billion times that of our Sun.

### Unusual Behavior: Ejecting Gas Instead of Consuming It

Contrary to earlier assumptions that the black hole was spinning rapidly, the team found that J0529 is actually ejecting the gas it consumes. The gas is being blown away by the intense radiation pressure caused by the black hole’s extraordinary light density. This phenomenon makes J0529 the brightest object currently known in the universe.

The black hole’s immense distance—over 12 billion light-years from Earth—had previously made it difficult to study its inner structures until the recent technological advancements.

### Shedding Light on the Origins of Supermassive Black Holes

This discovery may also provide crucial insights into how supermassive black holes originate. Professor Wolf noted, “While the rate at which they grow is still too fast to be explained easily, re-measuring this object and others like it suggests that supermassive black holes may originate from collapsing stars in the early stages of the universe.”

The findings open up new avenues for understanding the cosmic phenomena governing black hole formation and evolution, enhancing our grasp of the universe’s most luminous and enigmatic objects.
