"There is an error on all sides": Congress` Chidambaram on Karur stampede

**Congress Leader P Chidambaram Calls Karur Stampede a Collective Error, Suggests Solutions**

Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday remarked that “there is an error on all sides” concerning the tragic stampede during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed 41 lives. The rally was addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay on the night of September 27, reported ANI.

Speaking to ANI in Trichy, Chidambaram stated, “Mr. K Selvaperunthagai, the TNCC president, has made a statement that is the party’s position and also my position. However, after reading newspapers and watching visuals on television, I feel there is an error on all sides — in Tamil, we say all four sides.”

He added, “Those errors have prompted me to suggest a solution, which I have conveyed to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu. I am confident the government will receive many suggestions and take them into account to make future decisions that will be enforced for all political parties.”

The rally held on Saturday was organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay in Karur. Among the victims were 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. The deceased included residents from Karur district, with two each from the Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, and one from Salem district.

In response to the tragedy, TVK chief Vijay announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for each bereaved family and Rs 2 lakh for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences, announcing compensation of Rs 2 lakh for families of the 39 deceased and Rs 50,000 for each injured person, to be provided from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, on Monday, TVK chief Vijay held a video conference from his Pattinapakkam penthouse with senior leaders to discuss the next steps following the devastating Karur stampede.

In the wake of the incident, posters condemning Vijay, depicting him with bloodstained hands, have surfaced in parts of Karur. The death toll from the stampede at Vijay’s campaign rally has now risen to 41.
