Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed deep grief over the recent stampede at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The tragic incident, which occurred during a rally addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, claimed 40 lives and left many others injured.

Describing the tragedy as “heartbreaking,” Tharoor emphasized that such incidents reveal systemic flaws in crowd management across India. Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, he said, “It’s a very tragic and painful situation. Something is wrong in our country with crowd management. Every year, there seems to be an incident.”

Tharoor recalled similar mishaps, including the Bengaluru stampede, highlighting the urgent need for a national policy on crowd safety. “There should be certain rules, standards, and protocols in place,” he added.

### Calls for Government Action

The Congress leader urged both central and state governments to come together to establish “very strict procedures” for crowd control. He warned that without clear national standards, incidents like the Karur stampede will continue to claim innocent lives.

### Compensation Announced for Victims

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia compensation from the PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Each family of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh, while the injured will be given ₹50,000 each.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹1 lakh for those injured in the stampede.

Actor-politician Vijay, whose rally was the site of the tragedy, pledged compensation of ₹20 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh to those injured.

The Karur stampede has once again brought to the forefront the critical need for comprehensive crowd management policies to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
