No Deaths on Mount Fuji This Summer for First Time in Three Years

According to the prefectural police, between July 1st and August 31st, 2025, there were 48 mountain accidents reported. This represents a decrease of 14 incidents compared to the same period in 2024.

Notably, the number of mountaineering deaths dropped from seven in 2024 to zero in 2025. This marks the first summer without any fatalities since 2022. Approximately 70 percent of these mountain accidents involved climbers on Mount Fuji.

Authorities believe that the introduction of entry restrictions and mandatory pre-climb learning programs this season played a significant role in raising safety awareness among climbers. These measures are credited with contributing to the decline in mountain accidents.

In contrast, water-related accidents saw an increase compared to the previous year. There were 25 recorded cases, up by seven, and 12 fatalities, which is an increase of five.
