Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of a “GST Bachat Utsav” starting September 22, terming it a next-generation reform aimed at benefiting consumers nationwide. The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, effective from Monday, are designed to lower the cost of daily essentials and stimulate consumption-driven economic growth.

**Next-Generation GST Reform**

In his address to the nation on Sunday, PM Modi highlighted that this reform is not only about reducing prices but also about creating new economic opportunities. “This reform is not only about reducing prices but about creating new opportunities,” he stated.

**Economic Impact: Benefit to 99% of Goods**

The Prime Minister revealed that the GST reforms will impact 99% of goods, which will now be taxed under the 5% slab. Simplifying the tax structure to primarily 5% and 18% slabs, the government aims to make common goods more affordable for the general public.

“These changes will not only reduce prices but also generate new growth opportunities across various sectors — from industry and agriculture to services,” PM Modi added.

**Focus on the Poor and Neo-Middle Class**

The GST reforms have been prioritized as a measure for the public good. The Prime Minister emphasized that the poor and the neo-middle class stand to gain a double bonanza from these changes.

“When the purchasing power of people rises, it benefits every sector, be it industry, agriculture, or services. This is a reform that will touch every household,” he said.

**Political Response**

Prior to this announcement, the Congress party had raised questions regarding PM Modi’s stance on recent remarks made by former US President Donald Trump about India-Pakistan relations and concerns related to H-1B visa holders. However, PM Modi’s address focused squarely on the benefits of the GST cuts and the government’s economic roadmap.

**Background**

The GST rate cuts were unveiled earlier this month by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as part of the most significant indirect tax reform since the GST’s introduction in July 2017.
