Former FBI Director James Comey indicted on false statement, obstruction charges

**Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted for Allegedly Lying to Congress and Obstructing Justice**

*Sept. 25 (UPI)* — Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted for allegedly lying to Congress and obstructing justice during the 2020 investigation into claims of Russian collusion.

A grand jury in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Virginia charged Comey with two of three counts on Thursday, according to ABC News. The indictments were secured by Interim U.S. Attorney for Eastern Virginia Lindsey Halligan, despite earlier statements from federal prosecutors claiming there was no probable cause to charge the former FBI director.

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the indictments in a social media post, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s commitment to accountability. “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people,” Bondi said, as reported by Axios. “We will follow the facts in this case,” she added.

The timing of the indictment is notable, arriving just days before the statute of limitations would have expired, which would have prevented any prosecution of Comey for allegedly lying to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 30, 2020. The committee was investigating the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane operation, which probed potential collusion between Russian officials and President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

President Trump asserted that former U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert deliberately delayed action on the case to allow the statute of limitations to expire and subsequently fired him.

With the indictment, Comey will be required to appear in court for an arraignment hearing, which is yet to be scheduled. During this hearing, he will enter a plea and may need to post bond. If found guilty of lying to Congress, Comey faces up to five years in prison and fines. A conviction for obstruction of justice carries an additional potential sentence of five years and fines.

This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election. Stay tuned for updates as this case progresses.
